UCLABruins.com: Men’s Water Polo

Most incoming freshmen in Division I men’s water polo redshirt their first year. The No. 1 ranked UCLA Bruins have one true freshman playing instead of redshirting for the 2011 season.

Adam Wright’s UCLA men’s water polo roster lists eight true freshmen. Only one, Paul Reynolds, has a cap number and is playing instead of redshirting the 2011 season.

It has become traditional for incoming freshmen in this sport to redshirt a year, both to gain strength thanks to a year in a college varsity weight room, and to adjust to the larger playing area, as high school water polo is played at a length of 25 yards while the collegiate game is played over 30 meters (32.7 yards).
